Alfred the Great - King of Wessex

Alfred the Great was King of Wessex during the height of Viking expansion in Britain. After early defeats, he reorganised the kingdom’s defences through fortified towns known as burhs and a more mobile army. Alfred also encouraged learning, law, and administration, commissioning translations of key Latin texts into Old English. His reforms ensured the survival of Wessex and laid the groundwork for a future unified England.
